Overbite, underbite, crossbite, and other types of malocclusions (bite problems) are quite common. Often, patients use traditional braces to correct these issues. But what about Invisalign? Is it capable of fixing such problems? In many cases, yes, it is. Continue reading to learn more about how clear aligners may be used to help you achieve a harmonious, optimally functioning bite.
How Invisalign Works for Bite Problems
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment option that uses a series of clear, custom aligners to gradually shift the teeth into their proper positions. While many people think of Invisalign as simply a way to “straighten teeth,” the truth is that it can also be used to correct a number of bite problems.
In order to address bite problems, Invisalign is often used in conjunction with attachments or other orthodontic appliances. For example, small rubber bands called elastics might be used. They can help to train the lower jaw to rest in the proper position. The aligners themselves may be used to shift the top teeth slightly backward in order to create a harmonious bite.
Of course, treatment for bite problems is always personalized to each patient. During your consultation, your dentist can evaluate the specifics of your case and give you a preview of the road ahead.
What to Expect with Treatment
If you choose to correct your bite with Invisalign, there are a few key points that you should bear in mind:
- If you have rubber bands or other accessories, you must use them as instructed. Otherwise, you could delay your final results.
- Invisalign and its attachments may cause some oral tenderness and soreness. However, extreme pain should never be an issue (if it ever occurs, you should contact your dentist ASAP).
- Once you finish your Invisalign treatment, you must use a retainer so your teeth and bite do not regress to their former positions.
Can Invisalign Correct All Bite Problems?
When Invisalign was initially released a few decades ago, it was somewhat limited in what it could do. It was not usually used as a method for correcting malocclusions. Today, though, Invisalign has come a long way. It is now able to handle many cases of bite problems.
However, it is still important to remember that Invisalign is not suitable for all patients. Severe bite problems might require traditional braces. In rare cases, surgery is even necessary.
